Summer is almost here! What does it mean for you and your pup?
Some dog breeds suffer more than others during the hot summer months. According to The Spruce Pets, Flat-faced dog breeds, like Pugs and Shih-Tzus, need owners to keep a watchful eye on hot days. These breeds are more prone to overheating.
Bernese Mountain Dogs, Siberian Huskies, Malamutes, and other fluffy dog breeds would rather be frolicking in the snow. They get uncomfortable in the heat and are more prone to overacting.
If you have a more tropically inclined dog, like the Chihuahua or Airedale, you’ve probably noticed they are perfectly content to play in the sun and relax in the shade. However, all breeds can benefit from extra hydration and cool (literally) summer activities.

You guessed right! The most poisoned cue in dog training is the “come” command.
Sit & Stay Pro Tip — Keep your dog cool this summer.
There are things every dog owner should do on hot days, like keep their dog hydrated and take them for walks during the cooler hours of the day. But if you’re worried about your dog getting bored this summer, there are plenty of cool and creative solutions.
Set up indoor activities.
It doesn’t have to be at home. You can take your dog for a trip to the pet store or hardware store and let them go for a walk in the air conditioning. You might also consider a summertime treat hunt.

Take them to the beach or pool.
If your dog is new to the beach or pool, ease them into it by introducing them to the shallow end and keeping them on a leash. Check with local lakes and beaches to ensure they’re dog-friendly and that there is no harmful algae present. Some public pools even offer a dog day!
Nervous about taking your dog in the water? You can always buy a kiddie pool for the backyard or a dog life vest.
Make puppy popsicles.
Make a dog-friendly popsicle by freezing banana puree or plain yogurt. K9 of Mine suggests using a Milk-Bone as the stick. If you’ve got a dog on a diet, consider ice cubes or these cooling chew toys.
Try a cooling mat.
The Green Pet Shop has a plush, pressure-activated gel cooling mat for dogs of all sizes. It will cool your pup for up to three hours at a time, and you can take it anywhere.
The Smile Section — Meet Jake!
Jake is a beautiful rescue Dalmatian who prefers the company of his cats and guinea pigs over other dogs. He makes a lot of people smile.
“He is also a therapy dog. We visit special needs classrooms and nursing homes in Georgia where we live now.”
Meg adopted him when he was three years old from a shelter in Iowa. He’s now eight years old.
Thanks for making us smile, Meg M.!
