Who is Niall Harbison?
Niall is the man behind the movement 10,000 Dogs. His job as a personal chef to the rich and famous was enabling his alcoholism, and after a very close call that put him in the ICU, he decided to make radical changes in his life. One of these involved moving to Thailand.
As is often the case, the thing that pulled him out of his darkest moments wasnât a thing at allâit was a dog. Her name was Lucky, and after discovering how rewarding it was to feed, bathe, and care for one stray dog, improving the quality of life for all of Thailandâs street dogs became his mission.

We asked, and you answered! Affordability is the main obstacle when it comes to dog training. Is a new, more affordable solution on the horizon? We think so!
A Day in the Life
A feature video on Niall from The Project offers insight into an average day. He delivers meals to 80 stray dogs every morning, which costs about $30 per day. The street dogs know what the sound of his moped means; theyâre about to get food! And, boy, do they get excited.
Niall has a sanctuary for sick and injured dogs in need of special care. He tends to their needs before making food that volunteers dispense to another 800 dogs.
The rest of his time is spent fundraising and arranging transportation for dogs who need vet care. We assume he also finds time to sleep, eat, and maybe even use the toilet.
Niallâs Vision for the Future
Niall gained a following on Instagram and decided to put that following to use. With an army of dog lovers behind him, he saw the opportunity to make a real difference.
âMy ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of stray dogs in the world by 50%...I might be stupidly optimistic and ambitious, but I think I have to shoot for the stars.â
That goal requires saving 10,000 dogs per monthâhence the name of his movement, 10,000 Dogs. To Niall, âsavingâ means feeding, caring, and sterilizing. In many cases, he helps them find loving forever homes. Feeding the 80 dogs in his care costs about $30 per day, while sterilization costs about $50 per dog. There are also several dogs that need specialized care, like Whackerâwho was attacked with a hammerâand McMuffinâwho had a long but successful battle with cancer.
Read their success stories in this issue of the 10,000 Dogs newsletter.
On average, he spends $2,000-$3,000 per month caring for the street dogs of Thailand.
Luckily, Niallâs mission hasnât gone unnoticed and heâs gained popularity on Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok. Follow along for uplifting dog content!
